Steve Matthiasson has built a reputation as a top vineyard consultant, focusing on his passion for sustainable viticulture practices, with an enviable roster of clients that include Araujo Estate, Spottswoode, Chappellet, Hall, David Arthur, Robert Sinskey Vineyards, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Long Meadow Ranch, Trefethen, Limerick Lane, and others.
He has also garned recent accolades as a “winemaker to watch”. Under the Matthiasson label, Steve crafts wines according to the philosophy of selecting a small number of exceptional vineyard sites to make unique wine of the highest quality, with production that is simple but careful. He is known for using varietals and winemaking techniques that buck conventional wisdom to explore the possibilities in California’s terroir. As one top wine blog, Vinography, says, “If Napa is going to evolve and change as a wine region…. it will do so in the hands of people like Steve Matthiasson. His two flagship wines are so unlike anything else being made in Napa Valley at the moment that they are enough to stop any seasoned Napa wine lover in their tracks. Not just that, though. They are also phenomenally good.”
Steve’s respect for what nature provides and his belief in careful viticulture practices all support his winemaking philosophy of crafting wines of balance above all else. This philosophy is a perfect match for Passalacqua’s quest to handcraft wines of balance and finesse. As Steve explains, “I'm really into balance with wines. In crafting blends, or single varietals, I always emphasize balance over any other characteristic, such as impact, or power. Balance, depth, age-worthiness, and interest in wine are all enhanced by picking fruit a little earlier than is currently the norm for modern winemaking.”
We are excited to have Steve bring his passion for balanced wines, deep viticultural knowledge and innovative winemaking style to our winemaking team as consulting viticulturalist.
